Cover Page Page 7 of 28

Briefly explain your proposed use of funds:

The Museum will use funds to educate the public about Orange County’s
history with the development, design, and presentation of a permanent gallery and
special exhibits as well as through free programs, activities, and tours for both formal
and informal learning groups, and by collecting, preserving, and making publically
available artifacts and research files about family and local history.
In the past several years, the Museum has been growing its reputation
through quality exhibits and programs. We are the only history museum in the county
(as opposed to the many historic sites). This is a responsibility we take seriously.
Accordingly, we have transitioned to having two full-time and one part-time staff
members. These additional staffing hours have increased the services we have
been able to provide and has afforded the museum the ability to be open now seven
days a week (increased from three days a week).
As schools begin to return to pre-COVID operations, in-person field trips are
beginning to occur. One of our main goals for FY 23-24 is to significantly increase
our educational outreach with Orange County and other school systems, including
home school groups. For this, we would like to update our traveling trunks available
to schools (self-contained history-themed educational activity kits with handling
artifacts, costumes, craft kits, worksheets, and more), update existing lesson plans,
and create new lesson plans. With the requested funding, we would also expand the
structure and content of the children’s educational gallery (initial content put in place
in FY 22-23). Thus family friendly educational space, focused on Orange County
history, is unique to Hillsborough. In addition, additional funding would potentially
cover some costs of field trips and school visits in order to make them more
accessible. Moreover, additional funding will be used to contract individuals to
facilitate educational programs for children. For example, we would like to contract
with Haliwa Saponi artist Senora Lynch who works with children pre-K-12 to make
pottery and murals.
Funds from this grant would be used for personnel salaries for staff
completing the scope of work, exhibit supplies to create and maintain exhibits,
general supplies to support every day museum operations, and to support
educational engagement such as field trips and school visits.
DocuSign Envelope ID: C69C51AB-48D7-45AB-9CD6-A634302D2A04
