5 <br /> 1 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 2 RESOLUTION HONORING <br /> 3 CHIEF DEPUTY JAMISON R. SYKES <br /> 4 FOR 28 YEARS OF LAW-ENFORCEMENT SERVICE AND <br /> 5 AWARDING HIM HIS BADGE AND SIDEARM <br /> 6 <br /> 7 WHEREAS, Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office as a <br /> 8 detention officer on August 25, 1995 and held the ranks of Deputy, Corporal, Sergeant, and <br /> 9 Chief Deputy, serving in the Patrol, Civil, Courthouse Security, and Narcotics Divisions; and <br /> 10 WHEREAS, Chief Deputy Sykes served his entire career, with the exception of three years with <br /> 11 the Hillsborough Police Department, in the Orange County Sheriff's Office; and <br /> 12 <br /> 13 WHEREAS, Chief Deputy Sykes' service and dedication to the Orange County Sheriff's Office <br /> 14 and dedication, service, and accomplishments in the field of law enforcement during his 28 <br /> 15 years of service are hereby recognized and commended; and <br /> 16 <br /> 17 WHEREAS, North Carolina General Statute § 20-187.2 provides that retiring officers of the <br /> 18 Orange County Sheriff's Office may receive, at the time of their retirement, the badge worn or <br /> 19 carried by them during their service with Orange County; and <br /> 20 <br /> 21 WHEREAS, North Carolina General Statute § 20-187.2 further provides that the Orange County <br /> 22 Board of Commissioners may, in its discretion, award to a retiring officer the service sidearm of <br /> 23 such retiring officer at a price determined by the Board of Commissioners; and <br /> 24 <br /> 25 WHEREAS, Chief Deputy Sykes has served as a member of the Orange County Sheriff's Office <br /> 26 for more than 25 years and retired from the Orange County Sheriff's Office on May 1, 2023; <br /> 27 <br /> 28 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Orange County Board of Commissioners as <br /> 29 follows: <br /> 30 1. Sheriff Charles S. Blackwood is hereby authorized in accordance with the provisions of <br /> 31 North Carolina General Statute § 20-187.2 to transfer to Chief Deputy Sykes the badge <br /> 32 worn by him during his service with the Orange County Sheriff's Office; and <br /> 33 <br /> 34 2. Sheriff Charles S. Blackwood is hereby authorized in accordance with the provisions of <br /> 35 North Carolina General Statute § 20-187.2 to transfer to Chief Deputy Sykes his service <br /> 36 sidearm at no cost to the officer. <br /> 37 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Orange County Board of Commissioners recognizes <br /> 38 and thanks Chief Deputy Sykes for his dedicated service to Orange County and its residents. <br /> 39 <br /> 40 Adopted this the 16t" day of May 2023. <br /> 41 <br /> 42 Jamezetta Bedford, Chair <br /> 43 Orange County Board of <br /> 44 Commissioners <br /> 45 <br /> 46 A motion was made by Vice-Chair McKee, seconded by Commissioner Greene, to adopt <br /> 47 the resolution honoring Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes for 28 years of law enforcement service <br /> 48 and awarding him his badge and sidearm and authorize the Chair to sign the resolution. <br /> 49 <br />
