4 <br /> 1 <br /> 2 Jamezetta Bedford, Chair <br /> 3 Orange County Board of <br /> 4 Commissioners <br /> 5 <br /> 6 A motion was made by Commissioner Fowler, seconded by Vice-Chair McKee, to <br /> 7 approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation recognizing the success and <br /> 8 accomplishments of Orange County high schools' robotics teams. <br /> 9 <br /> 10 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 11 <br /> 12 Each team demonstrated their robot's skills and discussed the design and competition <br /> 13 process. They also explained how their teams perform community outreach and improve STEM <br /> 14 knowledge for all Orange County residents. Each team was presented with a signed copy of <br /> 15 the proclamation. <br /> 16 Chair Bedford expressed appreciation for the educators, staff, and businesses that <br /> 17 supported the robotics teams. She said hearing about their impacts in the community and <br /> 18 outreach to younger students was moving. She congratulated the teams for their success. <br /> 19 Commissioner Fowler said that the students' accomplishments were quite impressive. <br /> 20 She said she appreciated the collaboration between the teams. She said as a parent of a child <br /> 21 with special needs, she also appreciated that the teams used their skills and abilities to improve <br /> 22 the lives of people in the community. <br /> 23 Vice-Chair McKee said he had previously spent time with the Hedgehogs robotics team <br /> 24 and was very impressed. He said that in a competition the robots do not move slowly as they <br /> 25 did during the meeting but are very fast as they complete challenges. He said the most <br /> 26 impressive thing to him was that the materials to make the robots are not bought off-the-shelf <br /> 27 but are customized for each robot. <br /> 28 Commissioner Richards congratulated the teams, their families, mentors, and teachers. <br /> 29 She said she was most impressed by the collaboration, even though it is a competitive sport. <br /> 30 <br /> 31 b. Resolution Honoring Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes for 28 Years of Law Enforcement <br /> 32 Service and Awarding Him his Badge and Sidearm <br /> 33 The Board adopted a resolution honoring Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes for 28 years of law <br /> 34 enforcement service and awarding him his badge and sidearm and authorized the Chair to sign <br /> 35 the Resolution. <br /> 36 <br /> 37 BACKGROUND: Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office as <br /> 38 a detention officer on August 25, 1995 and held the ranks of Deputy, Corporal, Sergeant, and <br /> 39 Chief Deputy, serving in the Patrol, Civil, Courthouse Security, and Narcotics Divisions. <br /> 40 <br /> 41 North Carolina General Statute § 20-187.2 allows retiring officers to receive the badge they <br /> 42 wore during their service with the law enforcement agency. Further, the statute provides that <br /> 43 the Orange County Board of Commissioners may, in its discretion, award to a retiring officer his <br /> 44 or her service sidearm at a price determined by the Board. It is customary to bestow upon <br /> 45 retiring officers their badge and sidearm in recognition and appreciation of their dedication and <br /> 46 service.
