3
1 He said this is an important opportunity for individuals in the county to continue to have access
2 to Durham Tech. He said it is a first dollar scholarship and people know this resource is
3 available to them.
4 President Buxton said the Manager is recommending a $50,000 increase for the Back to
5 Work Scholarships. He said this scholarship is available for short-term workforce credentials
6 critical for people shifting their position in the workforce. He said this is financial aid that is not
7 available any other way, as Pell grants and other similar aid are not typically available for
8 continuing education or short-term courses. He said this scholarship fund is typically depleted
9 quickly, so he appreciates the extra recommended contribution.
10 President Buxton said the Carolina Innovation Hub is a new item in conjunction with
11 UNC-Chapel Hill. He thanked the University, the Town of Chapel Hill, and the Chamber for a
12 Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro for their letters of support for this so that some programming can
13 be brought to downtown Chapel Hill. He said he recalls there was a recommendation from the
14 Board when the second building at the Orange County Durham Tech Campus was being
15 discussed to ensure there are locations throughout the county, and this is an effort to lean into
16 that.
17 President Buxton said Small Business Center Coordinator will continue to specifically
18 focus on the work being done in Orange County.
19
20 Slide #3
MATH FOR DURHAMYS CONTRIBUTION
1.
