Announcements, Petitions and Comments by Board Members <br /> 5 Commissioner Fowler had no comments. <br /> 6 Commissioner Hamilton welcomed everyone in attendance at the meeting. She said <br /> 7 she attended the Alliance Health board meeting. She said the next meeting will be on June 1St <br /> 8 during which they will discuss the organization's budget. She said the Schools Safety Task <br /> 9 Force will meet on May 251h and assess what they have learned so far and discuss next steps. <br /> 10 She said on May 2011, Alliance Health along with Orange County Social Services and Public <br /> 11 Health, will host a Bee Well Resource and Family Fun event at Hargraves Center in Chapel Hill <br /> 12 to share information about physical and mental health issues. <br /> 13 Commissioner Portie-Ascott said it was nice to have so many people in attendance at <br /> 14 the meeting. She said it was her 90th day on the Board. She said since the last meeting, she <br /> 15 had met with the Arts Commission and had taken a tour of two Chapel Hill Carrboro City <br /> 16 Schools facilities. She said while visiting Culbreth Middle School, she was greeted with a <br /> 17 performance by a chorus class. She said she also visited Carrboro- Elementary School. She <br /> 18 said she also attended the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council meeting. She said the <br /> 19 Department of Justice will promote a campaign called NC SAFE the week of June 4-10. She <br /> 20 said SAFE stands for "Securing All Firearms Effectively." She said firearms are the leading <br /> 21 cause of death for children in North Carolina. <br /> 22 <br /> 23 Commissioner Richards arrived at 7:07 p.m. <br /> 24 <br /> 25 Chair Bedford said she attended a DSS Board meeting where they heard an updated on <br /> 26 childcare subsidies. She said that the next budget public hearing will be held on June 1St. She <br /> 27 said she was going to volunteer at the Bee Well event, assisting in the Healthy Carolinians <br /> 28 survey. <br /> 29 Vice-Chair McKee had no comments. <br /> 30 Commissioner Greene had no comments. <br /> 31 Commissioner Richards said she was just arriving from the Burlington Graham MPO <br /> 32 meeting. She said she attended an orientation with the Orange County Partnership for Young <br /> 33 Children. She said there is a sub-team working on filling open childcare seats and that team is <br /> 34 collaborating with county staff. She said she hopes the team will find an effective strategy so <br /> 35 that seats will not go unused. <br /> 36 <br /> 37 4. Proclamations/ Resolutions/ Special Presentations <br /> 38 <br /> 39 a. Proclamation Recognizing the Success and Accomplishments of Orange County High <br /> 40 School Robotics Teams <br /> 41 The Board approved a proclamation recognizing five Orange County high schools for their <br /> 42 robotics teams' recent success and accomplishments. <br /> 43 <br /> 44 BACKGROUND: Four robotics teams representing five high schools in Orange County have <br /> 45 had recent successes at state and international robotics competitions. Team 587, The <br /> 46 Hedgehogs, won the First Robotics Competition North Carolina District State Championship, <br /> 47 and the team was subsequently invited to compete in the international First Robotics <br /> 48 Championship. Team 4795, Eastbots, achieved the top ranking in the North Carolina district <br /> 49 and was also invited to the international First Robotics Championship. The Hedgehogs and <br /> 50 Eastbots both reached the playoffs at their divisions in the First Robotics Championship. <br /> 51 Team 4829, Titanium Tigers, won the Johnston County District event and later competed at <br />
