According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), women of color experience health care disparities rooted in racism. The maternal mortality rate for Black women in North Carolina is more than three times that of White women (52.8 out of 100,000 live births compared to 17.3), per America’s Health Rankings. At PPSAT, we acknowledge disparities in health care and the history and experience of Black and Brown women. PPSAT’s goal is to provide equitable care addressing the root of disparate outcomes. The CEO created a Building Equity and Accountability (BEA) working group of staff members from across the organization to partner with leadership and recommend action plans that promote racial equity and accountability. In 2021, all staff received Mind Sciences on Difference training to understand the concepts of implicit bias, microaggressions, racial anxiety, and stereotype threat. This training also helped to increase personal motivation to confront these phenomena in the workplace in order to improve employee engagement, patient experience, and health equity efforts. We devoted the greater part of a year to implement the training across the affiliate. To build on and continue this work, we have hired an outside firm that specializes in equity and organizational culture shift to create a training tailored to PPSAT’s specific needs. In 2022, PPSAT hired Estella Johnson as our first-ever Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to oversee the development, implementation, and advancement of PPSAT’s DEI strategy, including the organization’s strategic plan regarding internal equity and inclusion. Our VP of DEI will provide leadership and consultation at all levels of the organization to overcome barriers and identify and implement policies and practices that advance PPSAT’s goal of improving health outcomes in our service areas and for Black and Brown women. 6.Please describe how you have involved the intended beneficiaries of the proposed project in the planning and design process (in 100 words or less). Students who have previously participated in evidence-based programs can join a group of alumni. The educator meets with alumni regularly to discuss engagement opportunities. Alumni assist with implementing the program for future participants, allowing former participants to inform program implementation. The educator administers a satisfaction survey to each cohort of program participants after the program and reviews responses. If participants have concerns about the program and do not feel comfortable reaching out to the educator, they also receive contact information for PPSAT’s Senior Director of Education and can contact her directly with any issues. 7.
