According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), women of color <br />experience health care disparities rooted in racism. The maternal mortality rate for Black <br />women in North Carolina is more than three times that of White women (52.8 out of <br />100,000 live births compared to 17.3), per America’s Health Rankings. At PPSAT, we <br />acknowledge disparities in health care and the history and experience of Black and <br />Brown women. <br />PPSAT’s goal is to provide equitable care addressing the root of disparate outcomes. <br />The CEO created a Building Equity and Accountability (BEA) working group of staff <br />members from across the organization to partner with leadership and recommend action <br />plans that promote racial equity and accountability. In 2021, all staff received Mind <br />Sciences on Difference training to understand the concepts of implicit bias, <br />microaggressions, racial anxiety, and stereotype threat. This training also helped to <br />increase personal motivation to confront these phenomena in the workplace in order to <br />improve employee engagement, patient experience, and health equity efforts. We <br />devoted the greater part of a year to implement the training across the affiliate. To build <br />on and continue this work, we have hired an outside firm that specializes in equity and <br />organizational culture shift to create a training tailored to PPSAT’s specific needs. In <br />2022, PPSAT hired Estella Johnson as our first-ever Vice President of Diversity, Equity, <br />and Inclusion (DEI) to oversee the development, implementation, and advancement of <br />PPSAT’s DEI strategy, including the organization’s strategic plan regarding internal <br />equity and inclusion. Our VP of DEI will provide leadership and consultation at all levels <br />of the organization to overcome barriers and identify and implement policies and <br />practices that advance PPSAT’s goal of improving health outcomes in our service areas <br />and for Black and Brown women. <br />6.Please describe how you have involved the intended beneficiaries of the proposed <br />project in the planning and design process (in 100 words or less). <br />Students who have previously participated in evidence-based programs can join a group <br />of alumni. The educator meets with alumni regularly to discuss engagement <br />opportunities. Alumni assist with implementing the program for future participants, <br />allowing former participants to inform program implementation. <br />The educator administers a satisfaction survey to each cohort of program participants <br />after the program and reviews responses. If participants have concerns about the <br />program and do not feel comfortable reaching out to the educator, they also receive <br />contact information for PPSAT’s Senior Director of Education and can contact her directly <br />with any issues. <br /> <br />7.
