2 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING <br /> SUSAN PROTHRO WORLEY, <br /> RETIRING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, VOLUNTEERS FOR YOUTH <br /> WHEREAS, Susan Prothro Worley was not born a Tar Heel, but was fortunate enough to arrive <br /> with her family to Chapel Hill, North Carolina in time to celebrate her seventh birthday in 1960; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, Ms. Worley was educated in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools system, and <br /> received an education degree from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and later a master's <br /> degree from the School of Social Work; and <br /> WHEREAS, in 1989, Ms. Worley became the Executive Director of Volunteers for Youth, Inc., <br /> a nonprofit agency serving Orange County children and teens and was the agency's only full-time <br /> employee overseeing a mentoring program; and <br /> WHEREAS, under Ms. Worley's leadership, Volunteers for Youth has grown into a robust <br /> organization benefitting thousands of local youth through teen court, community service, and <br /> mentoring programs; and <br /> WHEREAS, during her distinguished thirty-five year career, Ms. Worley's leadership and <br /> guidance has extended to the countless staff members,interns and volunteers she has been a mentor <br /> to, providing invaluable career guidance and encouragement and setting a high standard for <br /> generations of nonprofit leaders; and <br /> WHEREAS, in addition to leading Volunteers for Youth, Ms. Worley has been instrumental in <br /> shaping our community through her numerous volunteer efforts including as a UNC School of <br /> Social Work Field Instructor, founder of the Third Sector Alliance, Member of UNC Center for <br /> Public Service Advisory Council, Interfaith Council for Social Services Board member, Chapel <br /> Hill Historical Society Board member, and current Guide for Chapel Hill Historical Walking <br /> Tours; and <br /> WHEREAS, Ms. Worley is retiring from Volunteers for Youth on June 30, 2023, after 35 years <br /> in non-profit leadership and service to our communities, and will be missed; <br /> NOW THEREFORE,we,the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize and <br /> express deep appreciation and respect for the services rendered by Susan Prothro Worley to the <br /> Orange County community, and wish her well in her retirement. <br /> This the 20th day of June, 2023. <br /> Jamezetta Bedford, Chair <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />
