26. Does your project also take advantage of other
funding sources?
To maximize the number of Orange County
residents served, Habitat seeks out a variety of
private and public funding sources. We have a
successful history of leveraging investments from
local government to raise private donations. For
the thirteen solar installations funded previously
by the Climate Action Grant, Southern Energy
Management subsidized the installations to help
reduce costs. Solar panels were donated by Strata
Clean Energy. Habitat was able to stretch funds
from the Climate Action Grant to ultimately
solarize thirteen homes instead of the ten
originally planned for.

For the proposed fourteen solar installations over
the next 2 years, we anticipate that Southern
Energy Management will again offer a discounted
installation cost of $10,000 per install, panels will
be donated by Strata, and Rotary district grants
and donations will raise at least $4,500. Duke
Energy rebates of approximately $3,750 per solar
installation may be available for installs that occur
before the end of 2022, but these rebates are
competitive and not guaranteed. Remaining costs
for the solar initiative will be covered by Habitat,
who relies on annual public and private funding to
cover the costs of vertical construction. Habitat
and other developers continue to face significant
inflationary price hikes that require increased
subsidy and community funding for us to continue
building affordable, green-certified homes in
Orange County.
27. Would your proposed project help you to take
advantage of funding from other sources besides
this grant in the future?
Housing affordability and climate change are two
of the most significant challenges facing our
community and nation. Installing solar on new
affordable housing addresses both issues
simultaneously, making the project attractive to a
diverse coalition of supporters. As Habitat
supporters and community members witness the
implementation and benefits of this unique
collaboration, we hope it may spur more donations
from those who are passionate about the
intersection of climate justice and economic
justice. We think this will be especially relevant in
DocuSign Envelope ID: 9E4C108B-9C5C-4E75-9AF1-C4CA2E16CEC5
