I am a member of the Teach Initiative, a group of
college students who educate youth on substance use and mental health.
Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards:
n/a
Boards/Commissions applied for:
Board of Social Services
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
I am nearing the end of my junior year of college at UNC, where I study sociology. Outside of
school, I have experience working in political campaigns, community organizing, and non-profit
administration. I also interned in a state-level legislative role. Additionally, I am a member of the
Teach Initiative, a coalition of students dedicated to teaching youth about substance use and
mental health, with the backing of an advisory board of mental health and substance use experts.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
As a young adult in our county, I feel a sense of responsibility to help provide our community s
youth with access to mental health and harm reduction resources because of the current mental
health crisis and overdose epidemic.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
Applying to this board, I know my resume is not impressive, but the contribution I can provide to
the board's diversity of viewpoints is. Across the country, we all have been living through a
mental health crisis and overdose epidemic, but young people have been the most affected
group. My hope for this position would be to combine my background as a sociology student and
a young adult to provide recommendations and insight into best serving our county.
Conflict of Interest:
Boards/Commissions appointments:
