4 <br /> 1 <br /> 2 WHEREAS, when an emergency occurs, the prompt response of police officers, firefighters, and <br /> 3 paramedics is critical to the protection of life and preservation of property; and <br /> 4 <br /> 5 WHEREAS, the safety of our police officers and firefighters is dependent upon the quality and <br /> 6 accuracy of information obtained from individuals who telephone the Orange County Emergency <br /> 7 Services 9-1-1 Communications Center; and <br /> 8 <br /> 9 WHEREAS, Public Safety Telecommunicators are the first, and most critical contact our residents <br /> 10 and visitors have with emergency services; and <br /> 11 <br /> 12 WHEREAS, Public Safety Telecommunicators are the single vital link for our police officers, <br /> 13 medical responders, and firefighters by monitoring their activities via computer and radio, <br /> 14 providing pertinent information, and helping to ensure their safety; and <br /> 15 <br /> 16 WHEREAS, Public Safety Telecommunicators of Orange County Emergency Services have <br /> 17 contributed substantially to the apprehension of criminals, suppression of fires, and treatment of <br /> 18 patients; and <br /> 19 <br /> 20 WHEREAS, each Public Safety Telecommunicator of Orange County Emergency Services has <br /> 21 exhibited compassion, understanding, and professionalism during the performance of their job in <br /> 22 the past year; <br /> 23 <br /> 24 NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, hereby proclaim the week <br /> 25 of April 9 through 15, 2023 as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, in honor and recognition <br /> 26 of our County's Telecommunicators whose diligence and professionalism help keep our county, <br /> 27 residents, and visitors safe. <br /> 28 <br /> 29 Adopted this fourth day of April, 2023 <br /> 30 <br /> 31 <br /> 32 Jamezetta Bedford, Chair <br /> 33 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 34 <br /> 35 Laurie Piche introduced Darren Strickland, 9-1-1 systems administrator and Rebecca <br /> 36 Jones, the 9-1-1 coordinator. <br /> 37 Chair Bedford noted that they have a very high call volume and thanked staff. <br /> 38 Vice-Chair McKee said that without telecommunicators they would have much more <br /> 39 difficult situations on their hands. <br /> 40 Commissioner Portie-Ascott said she looked forward to her upcoming tour of Emergency <br /> 41 Services. She said that the UNC School of Government also took a recent tour and that she <br /> 42 heard positive things about the division. <br /> 43 Commissioner Hamilton thanked the 9-1-1 communications division. <br /> 44 <br /> 45 A motion was made by Commissioner Hamilton and seconded by Commissioner Fowler <br /> 46 to approve and authorize the Chair to sign the Proclamation. <br />
