9
The interior of the original chapel is simply Finished, looking much as it did when
originally constructed, with vertical beaded board wainscoting around the entire room
and drywall above. The ceiling is also finished with plain drywall having wood molding
strips applied over the joints between large panels. Portions of the ceiling slope for short
span above each side, where it is applied to the undersides of the rafters of the main roof.
All doors and windows have plain board trim. The existing oak pews date from the late
20'h century. The stained glass panels are all the work of the same maker and follow a
unified design, with rectangular opaque panes surrounded by three bands of colored glass
and topped by lancet arched panels containing red crosses. The upper portion of each
window features a circular panel depicting a biblical scene, with a memorial panel across
the bottom. The paired wood front doors are presently of a six-panel configuration; these
replaced the original five-panel paired doors shown in the 1977 exterior photo of the
church (]photo 7).
At the west encs of the church, the interior was expanded with the addition in the 1980s of
a small chancel extending from the west end of the original sanctuary, providing more
space for a piano and several choir pews. The addition, which extends to the west of the
original structure, also houses a small meeting room with an accessible entrance at the
south side of the chancel, with a larger kitchen/dining room located along the north side.
Both connect to the original chapel through doors flanking the chancel. The existing altar
platform with its simple railing dates from the 1940s.
Site of Current Chapel (Map 2; Photos 1 and 6, Survey 2),
The two-acre church site, located on the west side of Dimmock's Mill Road, is open and
grassy along the road frontage with a stand of mixed hardwoods extending along the rear
or west half of the lot. The chapel is sited near the road, approximately mid-way between
the north and south property lines. There is a modern asphalt paved parking lot located
south of the chapel, providing spaces for approximately twenty cars. The modern
cemetery is centered in the cleared grassy area to the north of the chapel. There are 20-25
graves marked by a combination of modern granite gravestones and funeral parlor
markers, dating from 1956 through 2014. These site features are shown in more detail in
Survey 2, which depicts the 1996 property survey plat.'
Orange County Plat Book 76,page 71, 1996.
3
