Box 8181
Hillsborough,NC 27278
RE: Proposed Designation of the David Faucette House,2421 Bane Road, Efland, Orange County.
Dear Mr. Sandbeck:
Thank you for the report we received on the proposed designation of the David Faucette House, 2421
Bane Road, Efland, Orange County. We have reviewed the report and offer the following comments in
accordance with North Carolina General Statute 160D-946.
The report cites the historic significance and architectural description of 1999 National Register
nomination for this house, and supplements that nomination with updated photographs. The house has not
been altered since the 1999 listing. The nomination, and therefore the report, state that the house is
significant as a good, nearly unaltered, representative example of an early-nineteenth century farmhouse
in the Eno River valley.
The concise nomination was thorough and complete, and provided a good architectural context of other
early nineteenth and late eighteenth-century houses in the county. We have shared modest
recommendations with staff to strengthen the report, but we believe the report provides the information
that the commission and the local governing body will need to make an informed judgement regarding the
building's worthiness for local designation
The Office of State Archaeology notes the David Faucette House is closely related to the surrounding
environment. Archaeological remains, such as trash middens, remains of garden planting beds and fence
lines, former outbuildings, and other structural remains which may be present, can provide information
valuable to the understanding and interpretation of the property. Information concerning the character of
daily life at the David Faucette House, as well as structural details and landscape use, can be obtained
from the archaeological record. Additionally, due to the house's proximity to the Eno River, there may be
remains of prehistoric occupations. Therefore, archaeological remains may well be an important
component of the significance of the property. At this time no investigation has been done to document
Location:109 East Jones Street,Raleigh NC 27601 Mailing Address:4617 Mail Service Center,Raleigh NC 27699-4617 Telephone/Fax:(919)814-6570/8146898
