It's collection of
gravestones, both folk art and the work of professional stone carvers, and the surrounding rock wall is a
reminder of the thriving Eno Quaker community that played an important role in the early history of
Orange County.
The report for the Eno Quaker Burying Ground is well-written and thorough with a comprehensive
bibliography. We have shared recommendations with staff to perform a few minor edits to the report.
With these minor changes, we believe the commission and the local governing board will be able to more
accurately determine if the Eno Quaker Burying Ground possess the requisite special significance and
integrity required for local historic landmark designation.
The Office of State Archaeology recommends that the applicant create a long-term care plan for the
preservation of the cemetery. As noted in the report, it is likely that there are unmarked burials present at
the site. To ensure that these burials are considered in future cemetery maintenance plans, it is
recommended that the cemetery be investigated using remote sensing techniques such as Ground
Penetrating Radar.
Landmark designation means the community recognizes the property is worthy of preservation because of
its special significance to the local community. Any substantial changes in design, materials, and
appearance to the property is subject to the design review procedures of the preservation commission.
Location:109 East Jones Street,Raleigh NC 27601 Maifing Address:4617 Mail Service Center,Raleigh NC 27699-4617 Telephone/Fax:(919)8146570/814
6898
