We have reviewed the report and
offer the following comments in accordance with North Carolina General Statute 160D-946.
The report states that the extant sanctuary building, the site of the earlier church building, and the two
cemeteries are significant for the congregation's history and for the architectural significance of the extant
building, which is the most intact surviving example of a small frame Carpenter-Gothic style black church
in Orange County. The exitance of two sites and their distance from each other illustrates the negative
effects of discriminatory infrastructure practices.
The concise application provides a good history of the church and congregation. We have shared modest
recommendations with staff to strengthen the report, but we believe the report provides the information
that the commission and the local governing body will need to make an informed judgement regarding the
building's worthiness for local designation.
The Office of State Archaeology notes that archaeological deposits, such as structural remains of the
historic buildings on and near the parcel and remnant landscape features like old roadbeds, may still exist,
as well as debris that accumulated from activities related to church and neighborhood construction, and
church-related functions and events. The area may also contain archaeological resources associated with
19th century (or earlier) land uses that pre-date construction of the church and cemetery. Therefore, the
information obtained from archaeological research at this property could address various topics related to
Orange County's social history, including the character and experience of daily life in African American
neighborhoods, development and change in cultural institutions within the community, labor and
Location:109 East Jones Street,Raleigh NC 27601 Mailing Address:4617 Mail Service Center,Raleigh NC 27699-4617 Telephone/Fax:(919)814-6570/814-6898
