Both sites are located in Cheeks Township, approximately 2 miles southwest of <br /> Hillsborough,NC. (See Map 1) <br /> Current Church -Architectural Description (Photos 1-14): <br /> The current church sanctuary is a small vernacular frame Gothic Revival style chapel <br /> built in the early 1940s by members of the congregation. It is located on the west side of <br /> Dimmock's Mill Road, a public paved road, in a rural community surrounded by forest, <br /> fields, and dispersed residences. The chapel is a one-story rectangular building of light <br /> frame construction with lancet-arched stained glass windows. The chapel has a front <br /> gable roof and plain weatherboard exterior, now covered with vinyl. The interior of the <br /> chapel follows a simple aisled nave plan. The building has been maintained in good <br /> condition. <br /> The front elevation features a central double door topped by a lancet-arched transom and <br /> flanked by a pair of windows with similar lancet-arched tops. Centered at the front of the <br /> roof ridge is a diminutive bell tower with small louvered openings on each face, covered <br /> by a pyramidal roof. The side elevations feature pairs of lancet-arched windows like <br /> those on the facade. Modern vinyl siding was applied over the original plain <br /> weatherboards of the church and tower in 2006. Vinyl also covers the original exposed <br /> rafter ends to form a simple boxed eave treatment. All of the original wood window and <br /> door frames remain exposed and in place. The roof is covered with modern asphalt <br /> shingles. Extending westward from the rear of the main chapel a is a one-story gable- <br /> roofed addition, wider than the church itself, constructed in the 1980s to provide an <br /> expanded area for the altar and choir for the main chapel, along with space for church <br /> meeting rooms and a kitchen. <br /> The present stained glass windows are memorials installed in 2006. A documentary photo <br /> from 1977 (photo 7) shows the chapel with its original clear glass windows having a <br /> two-over-two configuration,along with a matching clear glass transom above the front <br /> doors. The same photo reveals other original details including exposed rafter ends at the <br /> eaves, paired front doors having five horizontal panels, and a brick exterior chimney <br /> centered on the south elevation to serve the wood stove inside. This view also shows the <br /> tower having larger louvered openings on each face; these are presumably still in place <br /> beneath the modern vinyl and smaller modern louvers. <br /> 2 <br />
