Because of that, Maddock, himself, was suspended for a time. Then, in 1766, the <br /> Regulators advertised a general meeting of citizens to be held on October 10 at Maddock's Mill <br /> (apparently without Maddock's permission) to have a face-to-face discussion with Court House <br /> officials concerning abuses of power, especially in terms of taxes, fees, and special collections. <br /> However, no officials appeared at the mill except for a belated messenger. Although the meeting <br /> could not be held, Joseph Maddock realized that his name had been linked not only with Herman <br /> Husband but also with the Regulators, since the meeting was to have been held at his mill. <br /> Foreseeing what this meant for his future in the North Carolina Province, Maddock began selling <br /> all of his considerable land holdings in the Eno River Valley and making plans to leave.26 <br /> In late 1767, at least ten Eno Quaker families, including Joseph Maddock and his family, <br /> traveled some 300 miles to east Georgia, where they initially acquired 12,000 acres from the <br /> governor to settlt.
