There are approximately 210 visible
graves, including 89 inscribed stones and 121 uninscribed stones. Most of the inscribed stones
are from the early nineteenth century, but five are from the late-eighteenth century, the oldest
being from 1785. Even though the new cemetery was established in 1869, the old cemetery has
four stones that post-date that move. The most recent inscribed stone dates from 1897. The
gravestones are modest in design. Some appear to have been inscribed by professional
stonecutters, while others were clearly produced by untrained artisans. No stone wall or other
enclosure surrounds the wooded cemetery.10
The congregation of Eno Presbyterian Church was organized in 1755, and sometime soon after
that a church was built and a cemetery was established. Located in Cedar Grove Township, the
site was originally on the banks of the East Fork of the Eno River. After the third church burned
in 1893, the congregation moved to a site two miles away, just north of the Cedar Grove
crossroads, to rebuild and establish a new cemetery. When the East Fork of the Eno River was
dammed in 1969, the Old Eno Presbyterian Church Cemetery was left standing adjacent to the
newly created Lake Orangeā€”a beautiful setting but one that was quite different from its original
setting. A survey of the cemetery counted 126 marked gravestones and 375 unmarked
gravestones. Of the marked stones, some date from the early-nineteenth century, but most appear
to be from the mid-to late-nineteenth century. A few date from the twentieth century. After the
church moved and a new cemetery was established, the old cemetery fell into disuse and was
10 Cemetery Census:Orange County North Carolina Cemeteries: 052:New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery
Old(1756). https://cemeterycensus.com/nc/orng/cem052.htm.Accessed 5-18-2020;New Hope Presbyterian
Church:History. httns://newhopepresusa.or0about-usihistory/.Accessed 5-19-2020.
12
