Blackwood, <br /> 919.245.2900 <br /> Jennifer Galassi, Legal Advisor to the <br /> Sheriff, 919.245.2952 <br /> PURPOSE: To: <br /> • Adopt a Resolution honoring Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes for 28 years of law <br /> enforcement service and awarding him his badge and sidearm; and <br /> • Authorize the Chair to sign the Resolution. <br /> BACKGROUND: Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office as <br /> a detention officer on August 25, 1995 and held the ranks of Deputy, Corporal, Sergeant, and <br /> Chief Deputy, serving in the Patrol, Civil, Courthouse Security, and Narcotics Divisions. <br /> North Carolina General Statute § 20-187.2 allows retiring officers to receive the badge they wore <br /> during their service with the law enforcement agency. Further, the statute provides that the <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners may, in its discretion, award to a retiring officer his or <br /> her service sidearm at a price determined by the Board. It is customary to bestow upon retiring <br /> officers their badge and sidearm in recognition and appreciation of their dedication and service. <br /> In recognition of his distinguished service, Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood would like <br /> to award Chief Deputy Sykes his badge and sidearm. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this item. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is applicable to <br /> this item: <br /> • GOAL: CREATE A SAFE COMMUNITY <br /> The reduction of risks from vehicle/traffic accidents, childhood and senior injuries, gang <br /> activity, substance abuse and domestic violence. <br /> The award of an officer's badge and sidearm upon his or her retirement honors the service the <br /> retiree has given to the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the County's residents to reduce crime <br />
