39
Commissioner Fowler asked for clarification of where the Motor Pool site is in relation to
the detention center.
Vice-Chair McKee said it was north of Highway 70 on Highway 86.
Commissioner Fowler asked if it is preferable to not be near the detention center.
Vice-Chair McKee said that is something that needs to be discussed with the Sheriff.
Jay Smith said he looked at co-locating the Sheriff's Office with the Detention Center, but
that would require buying additional land because there is not currently enough room. He said
that purchasing land, adds to the cost.
Vice-Chair McKee asked if this has been run by the Sheriff.
Jay Smith said they met with him but not this specifically.
Chair Bedford asked if the Sheriff's needs could be accommodated at the old EAC.
Jay Smith said that will be discussed in a moment but they thought they might use that for
other opportunities such as affordable housing. He said they can explore other uses.
Commissioner Richards asked if the old jail site could be used for Sheriff's Office needs.
Jay Smith said it could be if the justice department needs are not as large as they are. He
said that the Sheriff is usually remote from the courthouse specific but it could be located there.
Commissioner Richards said opening up the bottom floor gives room for other people to
move there.
Jay Smith said they wanted to keep the judicial component as glued together as possible.
Vice-Chair McKee said some space will need to be retained for the Sheriff's Office in the
Justice Center to meet the needs of moving people in and out. He said that right across the street
would work but nothing further.
Jay Smith said one of the things that was considered was in-custody holding, as well as
the day to day needs of having Sheriff's deputies within the courthouse.
Slide #24
i i
EAC BUILDING AND SITE
Status— AM currently located there. Also used as storage&swing flex 7
space.Total site=3.84 Acres { y
i
Options _ 6T
1.
