During fall 2001, <br /> the Board asked staff to form a committee of interested parties, within and without the <br /> County organization, to begin planning activities to celebrate the 250"anniversary. An <br /> update on the work of the "Orange County 250'Committee was provided at the February 2 <br /> Commissioners retreat. <br /> Since that Lima,the Committee(and newly-formed subcommittees)have met on several <br /> occasions to broaden the base of participation in the project planning, and to begin <br /> developing a m0reEetailed game plan for the celebration. As noted at the Board retreat,the <br /> ideals of freedom, education, cu@ural d versrty and preservation are planned to be the <br /> themes for activities throughout the year beginning September, 2002. <br /> Orange County's approach to the celebration has been to develop a grassroots theme, with <br /> events and agivities being planned from within, as opposed to hiring outside consultants to <br /> develop and stage activities for the celebration. In keeping with of this 'home-grown" <br /> approach, "Orange County 250" is planned to have a few County-sponsored events at the <br /> beginning, mid-point and end of the anniversary year.
