41
1 Bonnie Hammersley said the adjacency to Fairview Park probably contributed to the site
2 not being considered for the detention center.
3 Jay Smith continued the presentation.
4 Chair Bedford asked why the EMS existing building is not up to standards and asked for
5 a definition of"hardened."
6 Jay Smith said that there are meeting rooms that are required today. He said that
7 "hardened" means secured and you can't drive up to it. He said there are also requirements for
8 redundancy for 911 and other services. He said that it is not up to the modern standards.
9 Steve Arndt said the original building was a warehouse and was converted into an
10 Emergency Management facility. He said that the current building is not structurally able to
11 withstand a tornado or hurricane. He said they have to move to a backup 911 center if there is a
12 threat of severe weather. He said it is deficient in a lot of ways.
13 Jay Smith said that the cost to build a new Emergency Management building is higher due
14 to these considerations.
15
16 Slide #26
CENTRAL RECREATION CENTER
Status—Building is in poor condition and very outdated and cannot
accommodate projected growth of 6,000 GSF
Options i
E. He said the growth needs at Transportation would be accommodated
21 by building an addition on to the existing Motor Pool building. He said that the Sheriff's office could
22 then be accomplished. He said another option is to replace the central recreation building that is
23 in place. He said he likes the idea of moving out to Fairvew Park because it opens up opportunities
24 near the Whitted Building. He said that the recreation building could be used for parking or
25 employee amenity space.
26 Commissioner Fowler asked if there was room for all of that at the Motor Pool.
27 Jay Smith said yes and that he has those concepts developed. He said when they meet
28 back again that will be the time to share those with the Board.
29 Steve Arndt said that the Motor Pool site is a huge piece of property that is owned by the
30 county.
