Please briefly describe the proposed program, including an explanation of how it aligns with the
Town of Chapel Hill and Carrboro’s Results Framework, and Orange County BOCC Goals and
Priorities, and the target population to benefit from the program. (250 words or less)
Based on the transformative power of storytelling, our Learning Across Generations (LAG)
program shares the rich local history of the historically-Black Northside, Pine Knolls and Tin
Top neighborhoods in Chapel Hill. Working with K-12 students primarily in Chapel Hill,
Carrboro, and Orange County, our workshops bring oral histories into classrooms and
beyond. Our workshop formats are dynamic and interactive, drawing upon a mix of
experiential multimedia, in person and virtual presentations, and hands-on activities. We
also offer a virtual curriculum available for free for elementary students and educators to
teach portions of local history in their classrooms. This year, LAG’s new Chapel Hill Summer
Freedom School program will provide a space for collaboration and education in local, civic
and social engagement with youth during the summer. All of our programs bring students
into conversation with members of our Community Mentor Team, a group of veterans of the
local Civil Rights Movement, organizers, and activists who are passionate about youth
empowerment and working to make change happen.

The LAG program aligns with the Towns’ Intermediate Result 1.2, in which children
demonstrate grade-level skills, as well as with Orange County BOCC Goal of “ensuring a
high quality of life and lifelong learning that champions diversity, education at all levels,
libraries, parks, recreation, and animal welfare.”

8.
