Date of Incorporation (Month/Year): March 2012

2. Agency’s Purpose/Mission (no more than a few sentences):

The Marian Cheek Jackson Center’s mission is to honor, renew, and build community in the
historic Northside, Pine Knolls, Tin Top, and Lloyd/Broad communities of Chapel Hill and
Carrboro. The Jackson Center was first established in 2008 to respond to rapid
demographic changes in historically Black, low-wealth communities in Orange County, NC.
As a place-based and oral history-driven organization, we preserve the future of
neighborhoods in transition and pursue Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision of beloved
community through education and youth leadership, organizing and advocacy, and
community events.
3. Please provide a brief description of your organization’s past achievements in carrying out
similar projects and evidence of successful record of meeting proposed budgets and
timetables (no more than 100 words).

Both Learning Across Generations and Keeping Your House A Home are well-established
programs at the Jackson Center, having both operated for eight and nine years,
respectively. We have successfully managed our programs’ budgets while expanding
organizational capacity, as needed, each year. Over the past two years, the Jackson Center
has adapted our program operations to address community goals while adhering to our
budget. We maintain very high levels of neighbor and teacher satisfaction and student
engagement. The Jackson Center’s community-first, resident-led model has been proudly
recognized at the local, regional, and national level.

4.
