1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: April 4, 2023
Action Agenda
Item No. 8-i
SUBJECT: Contract Renewal with NWN for Varonis File Server and Active Directory
Protection
DEPARTMENT: Information Technologies
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
David Mathias IT Operations
Manager/Security Officer,
919.245.2272
Jim Northrup Chief Information Officer,
919.245.2276
PURPOSE: To approve and authorize the Manager to sign a three year renewal contract with
NWN to continue licensing and support for Varonis, a software system which provides protection
and the ability to audit County file systems and authentication mechanisms.
BACKGROUND: Orange County Information Technologies has currently deployed processes
around Varonis. Varonis is a system for managing and auditing events on file servers and the
Active Directory. This ability assists Information Technologies in providing accurate information to
other County departments for audit, compliance, and accreditation purposes. Varonis also offers
mechanisms for automated security response, including ransomware protection.
The system is proposed for renewal for licensing and support through NWN, a reseller of Varonis.
The contract document will be the Orange County standard contract for purchases above
$90,000.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The contract with NWN for Varonis renewal totals to $329,654.95, broken
into three yearly payments of $109,884.98. Payments would be made annual basis and not as a
three year lump sum.
SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: There are no Orange County Social Justice Goals specifically
applicable to this item: However, while an annual maintenance agreement may not seem to
impact Social Justice, this software is essential to the smooth running of government and like
many infrastructure items is a foundational element to ensure all Board Goals and Priorities are
pursued.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There are no Orange County Environmental Responsibility Goal
impacts associated with this item. The Varonis system does create a more efficient workplace.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve and authorize the
Manager to sign the three year renewal contract and other all necessary documents with NWN,
as well as any future amendments, to continue licensing and support for Varonis.
