7
Page 1 of 2 Krista Bremer
Volunteer Application
Orange County Advisory Boards and Commissions
Name: Ms. Krista Bremer
Name Called:
Home Address: 234 Stable Road
Carrboro NC 27510
Phone: 9194283301
Email: kristabremer@gmail.com
Year of OC Residence: 1998
Township of Residence: Chapel Hill
Zone of Residence: Carrboro City Limits
Gender Identity: Female
Ethnic Background: White
Age Range: 35-59
Community Activities/Organizational Memberships:
Member, NAACP
Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards:
n/a
Boards/Commissions applied for:
Arts Commission
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
I am a published author and also associate publisher of The Sun, a Chapel-Hill based literary
magazine that goes out to about 70,000 subscribers around the country. I have taught memoir at
the Center for Documentary Studies and I have organized panel dicussions at Flyleaf and
elsehwere in the county. (I also regularly appear at in-conversation events at the bookstore; I
have two upcoming in March.) For the past twenty years I have been steeped in literature locally
and nationally. My writing has won a NCAC Arts Fellowship and I have served on the committee
to select future recipients. (My work has also won a Pushcart Prize, a Rona Jaffe Award, a
Breadloaf scholarship, and other accolades.)
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I am passionate about the arts and supporting artists and I firmly believe that a thriving arts
scene is key to a thriving community. Also, I feel that part of being a member of the literary
community is giving back; artists need to support one another and pay it forward for the support
they have been given.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
I am married to a Libyan-born Muslim, and about seven years ago I converted to Islam. I am the
parent of two biracial/bicultural kids who identify as people of color, and as a result of my family
and my religion I have unique insights that may help me to bridge the gap between various
communities.
Conflict of Interest:
No, I don t believe so.
