Orange County NC Website
206
site each day. This is not an acceptable treatment in such close proximity to this significant landmark that
has been recognized by the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission.
As a mitigation strategy,we recommend that the design treatment for the front elevation as shown on
Sheet A-2,be continued around the corner and applied also to the north elevation. This should consist of
the same treatment of cement fiber lap siding, trim, crown, frieze and applied simulated windows. This
modification to the building design will provide a significant visual improvement to the elevation facing
NC 54 and the historic school building.
The proposed landscaping and planting plan appears to provide an acceptable level of visual screening
that will help to reduce the visual impact of the proposed new building once the plantings reach maturity.
The proposed project appears to involve the demolition of the existing old community store building now
standing on the corner of the proposed site. This is believed to have been built in the early 20th century.
This property(site number OR 0922),was first recognized as a historic site in 1992,when it was
documented as part of Orange County's first historic resource inventory project. Since that time it has
been altered and remodeled multiple times. While this loss of architectural integrity will make it more
difficult to justify its continued preservation, it appears to possess adequate structural integrity to permit it
to be moved to a nearby site and preserved in the event that there is community or developer interest in
such a project.
Natural Resources Review Comments:
Overall, the plan appears consistent with the County's desire to minimize adverse environmental impacts
with respect to the protection of floodplains, wetlands, natural areas and wildlife habitat. There are no
additional natural resource areas of significance(e.g.,natural heritage sites, proposed wildlife corridors,
threatened or endangered species)located on this property that would warrant further potential DEAPR
recommendations for open space or environmental comment.
If you have questions please contact Christian at x-2514 or Peter at x-2517.
