12
2
those that were unpopular. Certainly, there are times when executive decisions must be
made in urgent situations, but generally, I believe in a collaborative approach to
leadership.
3. How would your appointment enhance the diversity of the BOCC?
The BOCC would be enhanced by my diverse business background, including serving
on the Advisory Board for a leading bank in NC. Having started and managed several
human service and real estate businesses that provided the safety net to our vulnerable
residents provides me with a better understanding of what our residents are
experiencing and the urgency of our work.
My diverse experiences include living through the challenges of working and being the
parent of school-age children while lacking reliable broadband access. As a result, our
family had to sell our Orange County farm-based dream home after only nine years.
Furthermore, my experience serving on the Orange County Public Schools' Equity Task
Force provided me broad and deep perspective on the specific challenges our students
and their families face and reinforced how a structured, ongoing approach to addressing
these challenges benefits the learning environment for all students.
Finally, as a volunteer Chaplain journeying with patients and families experiencing
significant health crises, including death, I always created a safe space for them to
reflect and remember,to restore some dignity that may have been stripped away during
the disease process or from being hospitalized.
4. What do you see as the most urgent unmet needs facing Orange County. Please
limit to 5 or less and prioritize these needs, particularly if listing more than 3.
1. Affordable and reliable broadband access
2. Affordable housing including rentals.
3. Expand healthcare resources for individuals needing behavioral healthcare.
4. Access to Childcare.
5. Equitable Education in a safe environment.
5. If you could change one thing about the current county budget, what would that
be?
Considering the significant labor shortage impacting every sector in this county, the
implications for our most vulnerable populations, such as our students and people
needing behavioral health services, suggest that we act quickly. For that reason, I would
increase funding to those departments for competitive wages and benefits.
Applications are due to the Orange County Clerk to the Board by 5 pm on January 6,2023.Completed applications
can be emailed to clerk@orangecountync.gov or delivered to 300 W.Tryon St.,2nd Ar., Hillsborough, NC 27278.
