rALOrange County Agricultural Preservation Board 3
October 31 It,
2022
Renee Price, Chair
Orange County Board of County Commissioners
PO Box 8181
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Re: Agricultural Preservation Board Appointment Recommendations
Dear Chair Price:
The Orange County Agricultural Preservation Board (APB) discussed recommendations to fill
three vacant at-large position at its regular meeting on September 21st, 2022. The APB asks the
Board of Commissioners to consider appointing the following three applicants, who bring varied
backgrounds in agriculture and will help the APB continue to carry out its important mission:
Appoint new applicant Nancy Petry of Cedar Grove to the vacant at-large position
formerly occupied by Stephen Finley (position 9). Ms. Petry owns a farm in Cedar Grove
and is deeply interested in maintaining farming as a viable way of life in Orange County.
Appoint new applicant Michael Wagger to the vacant at-large position formerly occupied
by Renee Parker (position 10). Mr. Wagger served as a professor of soil science and
crop production at NCSU, where he headed that department for many years.
Appoint new applicant James Fickle to the vacant at-large position formerly occupied by
Kim Woods (position 12). Mr. Fickle has a professional background in crop science,
agronomy and soil science, with a special interest in production for local markets.
In addition to the above new members, the APB proposes moving member and APB
vice chair Kim Woods from her current at-large position (position 12) to the vacant
Caldwell district position 3. Ms. Woods owns a family farm in the Caldwell District that is
enrolled in the VAD program, and therefore qualifies for this District position. She is
active with the NC Cattleman's Association and the NC Forage and Grasslands Council.
The APB will continue to have one vacancy in the district position for the Cedar Grove Voluntary
Agricultural District (position 2). This position requires that the applicant be the owner of a
qualifying farm enrolled in the VAD farm located within the boundaries of this district. We expect
to have a qualified farm owner/applicant in the near future to recommend for the BOCC's
consideration.
Thank you on behalf of the APB. We are grateful to these individuals for being willing to share
their experience and time to assist with Orange County's agricultural preservation program.
Sincerely,
David Stancil
Orange County Agricultural Preservation Board
cc: Portia McKnight, Chair
NATURAL and CULTURAL RESOURCES DIVISION
Orange County Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks &Recreation
PO Box 8181, Hillsborough, NC 27278
Phone: (919) 245-2510 Fax: (919) 644-3351
