17
Elected Official's Guide to Emergencies and Disasters
Mitigation)
Mitigation aims to lessen the impacts of disasters and emergencies. The goal of mitigation
is to create economically secure, socially stable, better built, and more environmentally
sound communities that remain resilient during times of disaster.
On average, every $1 spent on mitigation projects to protect against natural disasters
saves $6 in post-disaster cost.
auwi undue ret&mu
tt" race IRTNdf1 kerd. 1r 4 Nm
dvtr"11 amn-@fit-Cost Ratio 11:1 41 4:1 4:1 6:1
Cost f$biINori) '11.YY,,, 54va s624 '0.6 '127
Benefit($bi.Widn) 113, 316:,,., 12200 '12.5 '1160
}}Y --mmmm
Earthquake 12:1 4:1 13:1 3:1 3:1
WildlandUrban Interface Fire mi 11 ALA 2. mt
Cq]vf(yYG]DH 1Ha hHdPsY PYI}aC 970YYJ
As part of our existing mitigation strategy, we have identified the following mitigation
priorities in Orange County:
• Pursue mitigation projects that improve the resiliency of our critical infrastructure.
• Compile a list of high-risk areas within Orange County.
• Continue outreach to the critical communities that are at risk during disasters.
NOTE: Further information and specific details on the Eno-Haw Regional Hazard
Mitigation Plan can be found at www.readyorange.org.
Orange County is also a member of the Triangle Regional Resilience Partnership. This
joint project, completed in 2019, between four municipalities and two counties that
created a regional resiliency assessment of stressors, assets and threats and prioritized
recommendations for the geographic area. Administered and facilitated by TJCOG, the
project facilitated conversation between local governments about their community
resilience concerns and needs, and ultimately, produced a unified report that assessed
resilience at a regional scale.
The full report can be found online at www.tocog.org
141
