24
Carr Mill Mall: Dental Health Services
The current capacity of the waiting room at Carr Mill Mall is totally inadequate for the number
of patients seen in the clinic. Patients often have to wait in the hall and children are often
running up and down the halls because there is no room in the waiting area. These are safety
concerns for the department as well as parents.
This problem can be remedied with some remodeling of the current space and will not require
additional space. This immediate need is addressed in the CIP request that hasbeen forwarded.
Animal Shelter
The current space plan projections for the new shelter is not adequate to meet the projected need.
The current shelter is approximately 10,218 sq. ft. and it is anticipated that the space projections
for a new shelter should be around 17,000 square feet. This includes two spaces/runs per dog.
You cannot clean a dog run with an animal present in it and allows space for the retention of
some evidence animals without interfering with shelter operations. In addition, the relocation of
the current animal control staff to the new shelter allows for a modest expansion of one
additional animal control officer and one additional office assistant by 2010. Co-locating the
animal control officers would increase the space needed an additional 2,200 square feet for a
total building of approximately 19,200 square feet. These figures may need to be adjusted
slightly as planning for the new shelter advances.
Storage Space
There is an over-riding need for storage space in all locations except Carr Mill Mall. Storage
spaces have traditionally been the first to be sacrificed when new staff has been hired and there is
no other place to put them. In addition, as programs have grown and changed, there has been a
need to have additional equipment available that is used often but not daily. Overall the
department estimates that it could use an additional 1,800 square feet of storage space(none of
which is records storage). Inactive medical and dental records storage prior to destruction of
those records would consume an additional 400 square feet.
