This may allow for more time for dialogue than in presentation of <br /> the slides. <br /> Animal Shelter Replacement/ Pet Overpopulation Report <br /> Last fall the Commissioners requested a report on pet overpopulation in the county. The <br /> attached report is in response to that request. It shows that significant progress continues to be <br /> made through a commitment to the spay-neuter program both by the County and by the Animal <br /> Protection Society. As the population in the county continues to grow, the pet population also <br /> continues to grow, however with aggressive adoption programs, more pets are being adopted <br /> through the Orange County Animal Shelter than ever before. <br /> The current Orange County Animal Shelter is located on leased land for which the lease is due <br /> to expire in 2006. Through the Orange County Space Study process and a subsequent review. <br /> and revision, it is anticipated that a square footage of approximately 19,200 square feet will be <br /> required to house a new shelter and co-locate Animal Control staff with the new shelter. The <br /> Board of Health is asking Commissioners for direction in the process and timing of the shelter's <br /> replacement. <br /> Future Space Needs for the Department <br /> In conjunction with the current CIP submission in December, the Department conducted a <br /> thorough review of the draft Orange County Space Study with its recommendations and a <br /> review of current and planned program activities of the department. The attached report details <br /> changes that were submitted in December and also provides updated information through <br /> March of 2002. This report takes in consideration items identified in the Department's Strategic <br /> Plan as well <br />
