32
Slide #14
Next Steps
• BOCC select Option A or Option B regarding homer the
County will spend opioid settlement funds on opioid
remediation activities;
• BOC discuss and consider proposed charge and
composition for the proposed Opioid Advisory Committee
• Authorize the Clerk's office to begin soliciting membership
applications based on the Committee composition so that
the Board can review applications and make appointments
by the November 15, 2022.
Commissioner Fowler said intuitively, she prefers option A as a physician because that
is the option that will provide the fastest assistance.
Quintana Stewart said she would support it because they do not lose the option for
strategic planning.
Commissioner Fowler asked if they choose Option A, could they still collaborate with
other groups in different counties.
Quintana Stewart said she does not interpret any limitations on collaboration.
Commissioner Greene said the NCACC has resources to guide staff along. She said
some of the items on Option A comes from what Orange County is already doing. She said
Option B would work for counties that are not used to doing this work or building framework for
multi-county strategic planning. She said she believes staff and the board will be able to hit the
ground sooner with Option A.
Commissioner Richards said she is not aware of active programs around this issue for
young people.
Chair Price said they saw this in agenda review and that she wanted to add the schools
in there somewhere but that it has not been determined exactly how they will fit in.
Quintana Stewart said both school systems are represented on the task force now. She
said that it is possible to add a position for youth. She said that the Health Department tends to
work with the schools about smoking and vaping.
Commissioner Hamilton said she agrees that Option A is a good approach. She said the
Board needs to know who in the community is at-risk to make the most impact with the dollars.
She said increasing the number of residents and youth representation on the advisory
committee is important.
Quintana Stewart said in North Carolina, those most impacted are white males between
the ages of 25 and 34. She said they make up 72.9% of those affected by opioids. She said
they are not seeing deaths among the youth population, but prevention is important.
