Agency’s Purpose/Mission (no more than a few sentences): Our mission is creating and protecting ownership and economic opportunity for all. We do this by providing responsible financial services, lending to small businesses and nonprofits, developing real estate and promoting fair financial practices. While our work benefits communities of all kinds, our focus is on those who may be underserved by conventional lenders, including people of color, women, rural residents and low-wealth families and communities. 3. Please provide a brief description of your organization’s past achievements in carrying out similar projects and evidence of successful record of meeting proposed budgets and timetables (no more than 100 words). In the 1990s, Self-Help began building and rehabbing homes to promote affordable housing and support low-income families. We have worked in Durham, Greensboro, Charlotte, and, most recently, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, focusing on infill housing and rehabs, and working closely with communities to achieve shared visions. We have developed 239 single-family homes and 305 units of multi-family housing and partnered with nonprofit and for-profit housing developers by coordinating land acquisition and neighborhood planning through land banking. The homes Self-Help produces as a developer and land bank coordinator ensure long-term impact by including deed restrictions that maintain long-term affordability. 4. Self-Help’s offices are in Durham County, and the organization has been certified as a Durham Living Wage Employer by the Durham Living Wage Project. Over the course of the next year, the Towns and County will conduct a comprehensive racial-equity analysis of the program and we are requesting basic information about your organization’s racial equity work. a. Please describe how you have involved the intended beneficiaries of the proposed project in the planning and design process (in 100 words or less). The Northside Neighborhood Initiative (NNI) has been guided since its inception by the Compass Group, which is comprised of residents of the Northside, Pine Knolls, and Tin Top neighborhoods that make up the NNI’s geographic program area. Compass Group members meet monthly with staff from Self-Help and our partners at the Jackson Center to provide strategic direction to the ongoing work of the program as well as more specific input on the key decisions regarding acquisition and disposition of land bank properties.
