It never occurred to us that we, because of our advanced ages -- 80 and 77 -- would be
honored guests on Franklin Street Monday night after the big game. Over and over students came up to us to thank us
for being there supporting the school, the team and the students by our presence.
Over and over we were asked if our picture could be taken alone or with another student. One young man came up to
us and said, "I'm so glad you're here. This university is all about tradition and you are still keeping the tradition of
Franklin Street alive."
Another said, "I hope I'm still coming up here when I'm your age."
We will long remember that remarkable mass of young humanity -- our well- behaved, enthusiastic students. We,
alumni of UNC, are proud to have been part of Monday night basketball on April 4, 2005 -- a warm spring night
when this university was so well represented on the basketball court and on Franklin Street and where we were
honored guests.
Charlie and Margaret
Chapel Hill super districts would solve the problem +_
Many citizens, including Orange County's elected officials, are at least theoretically committed to the principles of
fair and representative government. With the potential for seven commissioners and the county's population easily
divisible into thirds among Chapel Hill, Carr -boro and the nonurban county, meaningful representation can be
achieved.
For example, three super districts, two consisting of equal numbers of urban and non -urban citizens and one
consisting of urban citizens; and one at -large commissioner would promote a greater countywide perspective and
broader citizen participation.
One super district could cover Chapel Hill and the nonurban county, the second could cover Carrboro and the
nonurban county and the third could cover Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Voters in each super district would elect two
commissioners.
Commissioners elected from two of the super districts would be elected by a constituency comprised of roughly equal
numbers of urban and nonurban citizens as well as minority citizens who live in both the urban and nonurban county.
This would encourage candidates and commissioners to seriously consider all citizens' concerns. ^nnc
