ME
Beaufort County. The Beaufort County Board of Commissioners has seven members; all
are elected at- large. The election of commissioners works on a staggered basis with four elected
in one election cycle and three elected in the other. Both the primary and the general election
involve limited voting. In this system each voter votes for only one candidate. That is, in the
election cycle involving the election of four commissioners, each voter votes for only one
candidate and the top four vote getters are nominated in the primary. This process is repeated in
the general election.
Bladen County., The Bladen County Board of County Commissioners has nine members.
Six of the commissioners are elected from three districts, each district having two members, In
the election for each of the district representatives each voter is entitled to vote for one candidate..
To be nominated in the primary, a candidate in each district must receive a majority. The top
vote getter in each district gets elected in the general election. The other three commissioners are
nominated and elected at- large. Each voter gets to vote for one at -large candidate. The top three
vote getters in the primary are nominated and the top three vote getters in the general election are
elected.
Isg: F: \Lisa \orangecounty \Response to questions raised at May 5 BOCC mtg.doc
