37
3
attendance at both of the Public Hearings on this issue. This Task
Force needs documentation and that has not yet happened. He asked
for suggestions of better ways to reach the citizens.
It was suggested that conducting a survey at Hog Day, and /or a
newspaper or telephone survey, would be more effective than asking
people to come to meetings.
In response to a question from Steven Levine, Linda Carver
indicated that the Task Force would have an expert in local
elections address them at their June 30th meeting and study the
current and alternative voting methods.
Earl Davis stated that he and one other person collected 700
signatures at last year's Hog Day celebration requesting district
representation.
Lee Mortimer asked that statistics be requested from the Board of
Elections showing what percentage of eligible voters actually voted
for their Commissioners during the last. election. The results
would be sobering. However, those same statistics for the previous
election (when a Presidential candidate was not being elected)
would show even less involvement.
Warren Ray, of Bingham Township, commented that most people were
not aware that this meeting was being held. More notice needs to
be given to citizens to encourage their participation.
The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting of this Task
Force will be held on June 30, 1993 at 7:00 p.m. in the Government
Services Center, Hillsborough, North Carolina.
Respectfully submitted,
Aathleen Baker, Deputy Clerk
