Location Description Performances will take place in the Estes Hills Elementary School <br />gymnasium during the regular school day. For space considerations <br />and dev elopmental reasons, we div ide the audience into two age <br />groups consisting of the younger students (kindergarten through <br />2nd grade) and the older students (3rd grade through 5th grade). The <br />gymnasium is accessible by wheelchair. <br />Artist Description W e are working with The Durham Arts Council Creativ e Arts in Public <br />School (CAPS) program to secure our artists this year. W e chose a <br />div erse mix of multicultural performances including storytelling, <br />music, theater, and dance. Performance descriptions for the 2022-23 <br />school year are as follows (total cost $6,055): <br />Diali Cissokho: African Beat – A Musical History (2 shows, K-2 and 3- <br />5, for $1,000) <br />Students will explore the griot tradition (aural history) of W est Africa <br />in this participatory performance. Singing call-and-response, <br />clapping rhythms, drumming, and dancing, students will experience a <br />v ariety of instruments, languages, and musical traditions during this <br />unique cultural experience! <br />Donna W ashington: Customized Storytelling Performance (2 shows, <br />K-2 and 3-5, for $1,500) <br />Donna W ashington is a published author, storyteller and a multiple <br />award-winning spoken word recording artist. Her amazing v ocal <br />pyrotechnics make her stories come aliv e for audiences from 4 to <br />104. She presents multicultural folklore, personal narrativ es, and <br />literary stories. Donna has been featured at thousands of schools, <br />libraries, theaters, festiv als, and v enues around the world. Her school <br />shows are grade specific and targeted to students based on their <br />age, cognitiv e, & emotional dev elopment. Donna customizes each <br />storytelling performance with a selection of stories appropriate for <br />the age of the audience. <br />Carlotta Santana Spanish Dance Company: Fiesta Flamenca <br />Demonstration and Lecture (2 shows, K-2 and 3-5, for $1,875) <br />Hailed as “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine and <br />honored by the King and Gov ernment of Spain with La Cruz de la <br />Orden al Mérito Civ il for “all the years of passion, excellence and <br />dedication to the flamenco art,” Carlota Santana is an internationally <br />renowned flamenco artist and educator. Students will experience a <br />professional performance with dancers and musicians and will learn <br />the history of flamenco, the instruments inv olv ed, and the <br />importance of the artists’ teamwork. All ages can’t resist dancing <br />along during this high-energy performance! <br />Bright Star Touring Theatre Performances (2 shows, K-2 and 3-5, for <br />$1,680) <br />Bright Star Touring Theatre is a national touring theatre company <br />based in Ashev ille, NC. Their mission is simple: to challenge, engage, <br />and delight audiences all ov er the world.
