Project Director Title Director of Choirs, Chapel Hill High School
Project Director
Street Address
9217 Seawell School Road
Chapel Hill NC 27516
Project Director
Phone
919-929-2106
Project Director
Email
jbenton@chccs.k12.nc.us
W hat are you
requesting funding
for?
A specific program or project
Project/Program
Summary
This project will bring the choirs of Chapel Hill High School (CHHS),
Carrboro High School, and East Chapel Hill High School together to
perform in a combined concert in the Spring of 2023. The concert,
entitled A Celebration of Black Excellence, will be a choral concert
conducted by an African American conductor. W e plan to inv ite Rollo
Dilworth, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activ ities and
Music Education at the North Park Univ ersity School of Music in
Chicago, Illinois to serv e as the conductor. All 9-12th graders who are
inv olv ed in choir in the school District will participate in this concert.
All performed music will be works composed by Black musicians and
will center around the ov erall African experience. This concert will be
open to the public, liv e-streamed and recorded. Dr. Dilworth will also
conduct a v ocal workshop rehearsal and clinic for CHHS students the
day before the choral concert.
This concert is a call for social change and progress within our
community. W e hope this program opens doors to celebrate Black
culture through choral music, especially among our high school
students. The goal is that these concerts become a v oice for a
historically marginalized group of students and families to let them
know that they are heard within CHCCS. W e want our students of
color to be celebrated and honored for their contributions to our
community.
Project Start Date
(no earlier than July
1, 2022)
February 1, 2023
Project End Date (no
later than June 30,
2023)
March 30, 2023
DocuSign Envelope ID: D2F5FFB3-C1A8-4347-B58C-8B3894E886F2
