Project/Program <br />Summary <br />The Arts Teacher at Carrboro Elementary School (CES) and the entire school <br />community are planning for their annual play which in 2022-23 will be The <br />Hobbit. All students in the school will be inv olv ed in creating the play in <br />some way during their art classes—set dev elopment, costume design, <br />technical set-up—but the fourth and fifth graders will actually perform and <br />act as the technical crew for the play. Being a major part of the annual <br />school play is something that 4th and 5th graders v ery much look forward to <br />in their elementary school career. Students will hav e a chance to dev elop <br />their presentation skills, work together as a team, learn through written text <br />how to interpret the mood of a piece of writing and its intent, and to build <br />their self-confidence. CES has its own auditorium and there will be multiple <br />shows performed in early 2023 so that the entire school, family members, <br />and community members will all hav e a chance to v iew it. These are always <br />sold-out performances. Funds will be used for costuming, sets, and props. <br />Project Start Date (no <br />earlier than July 1, <br />2022) <br />8/22/2022 <br />Project End Date (no <br />later than June 30, <br />2023) <br />2/28/2023 <br />Project Goals Produce a high-quality play of The Hobbit that inv olv es all elementary school <br />students from Carrboro Elementary; <br />Expose students to the many different art experiences as they create the <br />props, backgrounds, costumes, etc. for the play; <br />Increase student performance confidence, especially 4th and 5th graders, <br />who will hav e the major roles in the play and act as technical staff; <br />Perform The Hobbit for the CES students, staff, families, and community <br />members in at least fiv e performances. <br />Audience Description CES students and staff will be audience members during the school day for <br />at least one of the performances. The demographics for the CES student <br />body is as follows: W hite-54%; Latinx-31%; Multiracial-6%; Asian-4%; Black- <br />4%; Nativ e American-1%. For the additional performances, we expect <br />families and community members of all ages and ethnicities to make up the <br />audiences. <br />Location Description Carrboro Elementary School has its own stage and auditorium where the <br />plays will be performed. The area around the school is a v ery walkable <br />community and there is ample parking at the school for folks who attend <br />ev ening performances. <br />Artist Description In this case, the artists will be the approximately 500 students at Carrboro <br />Elementary (grades K-5). The fourth and fifth graders will make up the cast <br />and technical crew for the performances. Students will be lead by the art <br />teacher at CES, Ms. Deb Cox. She has a background in not only v isual arts <br />but performing arts and has produced a play with the students at CES for <br />many years.
