prov ided free weekly one-on-one music lessons. Students utilize a <br />loaned instrument of their choice, which after three years of use, <br />becomes their own. Most importantly, collegiate mentors act as <br />positiv e role models for low-income youth. They teach critical skills <br />that music education prov ides, such as time management, discipline, <br />creativ ity, and dedication. <br />The organization was founded as a student organization at UNC in <br />2002 and now has chapters operating at fiv e North Carolina <br />univ ersities (as well as two out-of-state chapters in New Hampshire <br />and New York). The national office is based in Carrboro, NC. <br />Ov er 320 student/mentor pairs participate each semester. 96% of the <br />families serv ed are low-income and 78% of the children enrolled are <br />people of color. 100% of the families surv eyed indicate that they <br />would not be able to afford music lessons without Musical <br />Empowerment programming. <br />Our Mission- Creating equitable access to music education by pairing <br />children with college mentors to inspire resilience and confidence <br />through free one-on-one music lessons. <br />Our Vision- A world where music is a catalyst for all children to unlock <br />their unique potential. <br />Our Values- Musical Empowerment believ es in: <br />-the intrinsic power of music to transform liv es <br />-the importance of mentorship to inspire greatness <br />-inv esting in our children to unlock their unique potential <br />-compassion, respect, and dignity towards all <br />-the importance of personal and institutional accountability and <br />discipline <br />Staff: <br />-1 full time paid employee, Executiv e Director, Kelley Downey with <br />B.S. in Graphic Communications from Clemson Univ ersity <br />-1 part time paid employee, Communications Specialist, Melanie <br />Moseley with Speech Pathology and Audiology from NC A&T <br />Board: <br />W e are proud to hav e a div erse board of ten directors. The National <br />Board Chair and 50% of the directors are people of color. The board <br />is composed of 4 women and 6 men with ages v arying from grad <br />student to retiree.
