Funding will help to cover personnel costs for key construction and program staff. These funds fill a critical need for our organization as many funds supporting the Home Preservation program cannot be spent on necessary expenses like staffing. The pandemic has made clear that it is both a public health and a moral imperative to keep people safely in their homes. Populations that have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, such as the elderly, disabled, and communities of color, are the target demographics served by Habitat’s Home Preservation program in Orange County. In order to protect vulnerable residents, Habitat was forced in the first year of COVID-19 to significantly limit the number of homes that staff entered to complete repairs. At the same time, the need for and importance of these services has only grown. This investment of $80,000 in Human Services funding from Orange County will ensure that Habitat can continue to protect individual and community health while preserving the naturally occurring stock of affordable housing across the County.
