12
1 Chair Price said it is possible for strategic planning to be done across a longer or shorter
2 time period depending on the Board's direction and approach. She said while she likes the
3 goals, they are more like vision statements. She said having the bare bones of a strategic plan
4 would help new commissioners coming on, and would also help the community understand
5 where the county is and where it's going. She said the strategic plan has to be a living
6 document, but can at least provide some direction to departments and others.
7 Commissioner Richards said there are many ways to do strategic planning, and it can be
8 really detailed or not. She said she sometimes hears that there was some Board at some time
9 that said a future Board could never touch xyz, like the rural buffer. She asked how this impacts
10 and limits the Board for planning for the future. She said these past decisions and goals are tied
11 to broad strategies that guide what the departments are doing. She said the other complication
12 for her is how advisory boards and their goals and priorities all tie in.
13 Lydian Altman reviewed what notes she took on the Board's "Goals" sheet, and
14 summarized what she heard from the Board. She asked if staff has anything to add.
15 Travis Myren said the degree of community input and the Board's goal for the strategic
16 plan would determine how long it takes, associated costs, etc.
17 Lydian Altman agreed with Travis Myren.
18 Travis Myren said it would be easy to convene the Board and for staff to ask the
19 strategic questions and get direction, but the community engagement part can be more
20 complicated depending on the Board's desires and direction.
21
22 Lydian Altman resumed the PowerPoint presentation:
Why Man?
Pnaifize Be clear about priorities
Alla Allocate resources
SENT towards those priorities
°"°g• Manage performance to
carry Gaut the funded
programs
• Evaluate performance in
terms of objectives
23
