Please briefly describe the proposed program, including an explanation of how it aligns with the <br />Town of Chapel Hill and Carrboro’s Results Framework, and Orange County BOCC Goals and <br />Priorities, and the target population to benefit from the program. (250 words or less) <br /> <br />Because of language, training, and other barriers to higher income jobs, the majority of refugees in <br />Orange County are low income and many are food insecure. Those that do seek out food assistance, <br />through SNAP-EBT, food banks, and similar services, struggle to access culturally appropriate foods <br />that are familiar and critical to a healthy culturally rooted diet. Traditional food banks or SNAP <br />retailers often provide unhealthy or unfamiliar food items that add to the burden of chronic disease in <br />the refugee community and replace once healthy food traditions that rely on culturally appropriate <br />foods. <br /> <br />To address the issue of access to culturally relevant food for refugees, TTCF has developed a holistic <br />food access program that works with food pantries and community donations to purchase culturally <br />appropriate Asian foods grown by TTCF farmers for donation to organizations such as PORCH and <br />the Refugee Support Center. Vegetables and herbs such as lemongrass, bitter melon, snake gourd and <br />pennywort have been grown and harvested TTCF farmers for this program <br /> <br />As of Fall 2021, this food access program has distributed more than 21,311 pounds of food to almost <br />5,000 refugees. Farmers growing specifically for these programs have earned more than $87,588 <br />since 2015 <br /> <br /> <br />Healthy Food Access Program <br />8.
