Community Impact The children and teachers become the artists to create a large work
that will become a permanent part of the school. The first year that I
completed one of these projects I labeled the indiv idual tiles so the
children ended up working on two tiles each, but in subsequent years
I hav e found it is ev en more impactful not to do so, children (and
teachers) make tiles, they apply slip to tiles, they create an abstract
pattern on tiles and they transfer a portion of the larger art. So each
tile is the work of many kids, many hands, further driv ing home the
point that we are making something together far greater than any of
us could make indiv idually. I do end up contributing some to these
indiv idual steps, but by and large, ov er 95% of the actual creation of
the piece happens by the kids. All of this is made ev en more
impactful as we install this piece into the school, installing a beautiful,
meaningful work permanently on site.
Artist Experience I completed the tenth of these residencies in May of 2022, with each
one the project has ev olv ed, but I am incredibly proud of all ten and
of the work that the kids and I created and installed in their schools. I
am passionate about sharing my enthusiasm for clay as a medium
with the kids and about creating something in collaboration with
them. Outside of these projects I hav e taught clay sculpture and
wheelthrowing for 17 years. I also create and exhibit my own clay
work.
How do you plan to
market your project?
I will create a v ideo to accompany the project that I will share, as well
as photos of the piece, but the audience for the piece is primarily the
current and future community of the school. Early one morning
during a residency I remember watching all those busses roll in,
amidst all the turmoil in the world here was a massiv e effort still
underway to fight ignorance. That is the desired audience for the
piece, little marketing will be required as the piece will be there in their
school for them.
PROJECT/PROGRAM
BUDGET
Please fill out the charts below with your project's expenses and
income.
