Program information Page 7 of 15

PROGRAM INFORMATION
*Please submit for each program if applying for funding for more than one program.

7. Program Name: Food for Families (FFF)

Program Primary Contact and Title: Debbie Horwitz, Founder and FFF Program Director

Telephone Number: 919-971-1749 E-Mail: debbie@porchcommunities.org

7. Please briefly describe the proposed program, including an explanation of how it aligns with the Town of
Chapel Hill and Carrboro’s Results Framework, and Orange County BOCC Goals and Priorities, and the target
population to benefit from the program. (250 words or less)
Over 10.8% of adults and 12.2% of children in Orange County are food insecure, meaning
that they lack sufficient food for an active, healthy life. Hungry kids perform worse in school,
are sick more often, and have more social and behavioral problems. Eighty percent of
families enrolled in PORCH’s Food for Families program have incomes that are at or below
federal poverty level (100% below 1.5 times poverty level). In a recent survey, 72% of
families report having less income due to COVID-19, and 69% worry about getting enough
food to eat.
PORCH’s FFF is a unique program that increases livelihood security for 485 families (with
1187 children), identified by school social workers as struggling to afford sufficient food. FFF
provides fresh foods to low-income families with children each month (including many
refugees), with a quantity and variety of highly nutritious fresh food that is not provided by
any other local pantries or hunger relief organizations. FFF currently provides fresh food
(e.g., wide variety of fresh produce, chicken, eggs, milk, and more) each month (totaling
over 33,000 pounds per month), lasting an average of 10 days.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, PORCH has also provided grocery gift cards each
month to our participating families (totaling $626,000), providing the ability and dignity to
make food choices and to purchase important necessary household items. The gift cards
have been highly impactful and we will provide them as possible based on availability of
funds to support this component of the program.

DocuSign Envelope ID: 29366550-6A20-4B30-A362-E40C819AE769
