Title of Grant
Request
Redbud W riting Project community-oriented Fiction I class
Grant Amount
Requested
$2000
Project Start Date
(no earlier than July
1, 2022)
May 2023
Project End Date (no
later than June 30,
2023)
June 2023
Project/Program
Summary
Ev eryone, not just those who can afford it, deserv es the chance to
dev elop their v oice and tell their story: writing and reading are
powerful driv ers of self-analysis, self-actualization, and empathy, and
can actually change the way people v iew themselv es and the world.
For the past two years, the Orange County Arts Commission has
made it possible for me and Arshia Simkin, the two cofounders of the
Redbud W riting Project, to offer a free community class to Orange
County residents from marginalized backgrounds. This year, I taught
an Intro to Memoir class on Zoom to four women affiliated with
Orange County’s Jackson Center.
This year, Arshia and I are applying for separate grants (see Arshia’s
separate proposal) so that we can offer two classes to Orange
County residents. I plan to teach a six-week Fiction I class in a rural
part of Orange County, which will allow me to reach students who
might not otherwise hav e access to arts programming. I will use the
money from the grant to pay for my time teaching, planning, and
executing this program. W e usually run these programs the winter
after receiv ing grants, but this year, I plan to run the class in May-
June to giv e myself more time to set up the class in a rural part of the
county.
Community Impact W e will inv ite eight students to participate in the course. W e are
committed to identifying students who cannot afford to pursue
creativ e writing courses that cost money, as well as students who
hail from marginalized gender identities, racial identities, or
socioeconomic classes. In the case of this particular course, I believ e
it's essential to reach students who don't hav e the time or ability to
trav el to the artsy downtown areas of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and
Hillsborough -- especially those who might not hav e a car or any
other easy way to reach a class meeting in a more central location.
DocuSign Envelope ID: BB3D6414-08DC-4145-989F-4B40A01ABF0F
