Artist Experience As an indiv idual artist and a representativ e of Redbud, I hav e had
numerous experiences ov er the past three years with writing classes
geared towards under-represented communities. Some of my recent
community writing classes include this ear’s Intro to Memoir class,
which was transformativ e for the four students who participated; one
said, “Taking this memoir class for the past few months has been
awesome. It has not only giv en me a set time to write and reflect but
it focuses on the importance of understanding who I hav e been ov er
my lifetime. The experience was awesome and one that I would
suggest for ev eryone to be a part of if they can. I appreciated being
taught by Emily and the structure the class had. The materials we
read for homework allowed personal exploration and brought up so
many topics/ texts I had otherwise not heard of.” In addition, in April,
Arshia and I cotaught an afternoon class at the Durham Center for
Senior Life, where we instructed eight middle- and low-income
seniors in a crash course in writing yourself as a character in
memoir. By the end of the workshop, in the words of a senior center
employee, the residents were “glowing.” And finally, through
continuing to include marginalized students in our Redbud courses
through our scholarship program, we hav e seen remarkable
outcomes: an incredible improv ement in their writing skills, serious
amounts of work done on worthwhile nov els and memoir projects.
This year’s grants from Orange County would allow us to continue to
reach these community classes and reach and empower students
from all walks of life.
How do you plan to
market your project?
In the past, I hav e marketed these classes through outreach to
nonprofits and community groups in Orange County; posting on
social media; and contacting students already in Redbud's orbit. I
plan to follow that same marketing plan again.
PROJECT/PROGRAM
BUDGET
Please fill out the charts below with your project's expenses and
income.
