The document has been duly authorized by the governing board of the applicant. Children should never have to experience hunger or poor nutrition – and this especially shouldn’t occur in the wealthiest county in NC. Yet that is the case for nearly 1 in every 3 children in our county. At school, if a child looks to the right and left, one of those kids is likely to be food insecure. Parents are having to make difficult decisions between food and rent, choosing less healthy, inexpensive food to get their kids through the day and risking their future health, and even skipping meals. Can you imagine not having enough for your child or not being able to fill their bellies with nutrient dense foods you know they need to grow and succeed? THAT is why TABLE exists – to meet basic food & nutritional needs so ALL kids have the opportunity to lead healthy, strong, full lives. Over the past couple of years, we have improved our food access programming in ways never possible before: • Now in spring 2022, TABLE is delivering to about 730 kids weekly, still directly at their homes. • More efficient and effective- fewer than 150 volunteers package and deliver the food each week. • Increased food per child by 50% per week since bags no longer have to fit inside backpacks and be transported by little ones on school buses. Much of this additional food is local and organic produce. • Eliminated potential for stigma that students may have experienced when receiving food in front of classmates. • Socially distant farm days - opportunities for families to see where their food comes from and meet-and-greet with TABLE staff, which we have never been able to do before. • Piloting a customized ordering experience. • Piloting nutrition education for families to enjoy at home. In our last annual impact survey, we learned that food from TABLE improved 89.6% of children’s eating habits (65.8% of those have more opportunities to try new fresh items because of TABLE). Furthermore, 88.8% of parents said receiving weekly food from TABLE eases a financial burden. One parent shared with us, “Having to choose between healthy food for my kids and paying bills is a choice that would break my heart… but with help from TABLE I don’t have that burden.” We respectfully request funding from Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Orange County for funds to support our food access programs and general operations, specifically, for the purchase of food, supporting our program staff, funding our space to store and process food, and other general operational support. Thank you for considering funding our program so parents don’t have the heartbreaking burden of choosing between paying bills or feeding healthy food to their kids.
