Department of Health and Human Services in urging residents to forgo traditional
Halloween activities because of concerns for spreading COVID-19.
But that doesn’t mean all hope for having a good time this year is lost.
“We want people to have a good time because people need a bit of a release and to have some fun,”
said Kristin Prelipp, communications manager and public information o!cer with the Orange
County Health Department. “That makes you healthy, too. We’re just hoping that whatever people
do Halloween night, then two weeks later we’re not all paying the price for that.”
Prelipp said the OCHD took guidance from the CDC and N.C. DHHS, which broke down Halloween
activities into risk categories. Door-to-door trick-or-treating and large costume parties are
considered high risk because of the potential for many hands touching the same surface.
“If you happen to have one person in that crowd that is sick, it’s just so contagious,” Prelipp said.
“We’re trying to encourage people that if they’re going to do these activities, at least know what are
the riskiest parts. In general, we’re looking at things in more of a risk-reduction model. We can’t stay
home forever. You have to be able to go out and live your life. Many of these activities, like Trunk-or-
Treat, or door-to-door Trick-or-Treating are in the high-risk category.”
