P a g e 19 o f 2 3
24. Please describe any avoided
financial costs or savings
related to the project and over
what period of time those costs
will be avoided/reduced:
Initially, if Solarban 70 is installed, the size if the HVAC system can
be reduced which will result in a savings. Beyond that, Solarban
70 will reduce the cooling load for the building by 30% resulting in
lower power usage and lower energy bills for the life of the
building.

Installing light sensors and using LED lighting will produce a
financial savings for The ArtsCenter which will last for the lifetime
of the building.

Smart, motorized shades can help control the solar gain and heat
loss a building experiences naturally throughout the day simply
by opening and closing at pre-programmed times, maximizing the
energy efficiency of the HVAC system which will result is lower
energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint.

The charging stations will produce a savings for community
members, more so than The ArtsCenter. Joining the trend of
providing charging stations The ArtsCenter will be giving their
patrons this added convenience to encourage the use of both
electric cars and electric bikes, thus reducing the carbon footprint
of the entire community. The patrons will save the cost of gas.

25. Does your project accelerate or
expand on existing programs
that already show positive
impact?
Yes, it expands on the current design of the new building which
has the vast majority of the glazing with no direct sun exposure or
with protection form overhead sun via porch roofs and from low
sun via existing trees on site. This type of glazing provides passive
lighting, reducing the need for electric lighting. The low-e coating
will add the benefit of reducing heat gain.

By installing sensors, electric lighting is only used when the need
is there. By using LED lights, when electric lighting is needed, the
most environmentally conscious lighting will be used. The result is
a more energy efficient and environmentally responsible building.

Motorized shades will further control the solar gain and heat loss
of the building and maximize the efficiency of the HVAC system.

Presently, the plan has bike storage that exceeds code but with
this proposal, TAC could expand even more, the bike storage, plus
add charging stations for electric vehicles and electric bikes. The
new ArtsCenter, located on several bus line, is not only
convenient, but is also walking and biking distance from
downtown Carrboro and Chapel Hill, The Carrboro Farmers’
Market and many residential neighborhoods.
